Malaria
It’s a parasite that causes malaria. The parasite gets into people when a mosquito bites them. People who have malaria usually feel very sick with a high fever and shaking chills.
The disease is unusual in temperate climates, and malaria remains an extremely frequent occurrence in tropical and subtropical countries. Each year nearly 290 million people are infected with malaria, and more than 400,000 people die of the disease.
In order to protect the population from mosquito bites, global health programmes are providing preventative medicines and insecticide bed nets in order to combat malaria infection. The World Health Organization has recommended a malaria vaccine for use in children who live in countries with high numbers of malaria cases.
You can protect yourself during your travels by wearing proper clothing, bed nets and insecticides. Preventive medicines can also be taken before, during and after travel to areas where you are at increased risk. Common medications that treat the disease have developed resistance in a number of malaria parasites.
