What is Mpox (MonkeyPox) and what are its prevention, symptoms, treatment, and complications?

What is Mpox (previously called Monkeypox)?

Mpox, previously called monkeypox, is a rare but serious viral illness that can be transmitted from animals to people and from person to person. The virus is related to smallpox, but it is milder.

Symptoms of Mpox (Monkeypox)

The symptoms of mpox usually appear 5 to 21 days after exposure to the virus. They can include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rash

The rash usually starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, including the hands, feet, and mouth. The rash can look like pimples or blisters, and it may be painful or itchy.

How is Mpox (Monkeypox) Spread?

Mpox can be spread through contact with the fluids or sores of an infected animal or person. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated objects, such as bedding or clothing.

How to Prevent Mpox (Monkeypox)
There are a few things you can do to help prevent mpox:

  • Avoid contact with animals that may be infected.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick with mpox.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid sharing personal items, such as towels or bedding, with people who are sick with mpox.

Treatment for Mpox (Monkeypox)
There is no specific treatment for mpox. However, most people recover on their own within a few weeks. In some cases, antiviral medications may be used to treat mpox.

Complications of Mpox (Monkeypox)

In rare cases, mpox can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia, sepsis, and encephalitis.

If you think you may have mpox, it is important to see a doctor right away. Mpox can be a serious illness, but it is usually treatable.

  • The 2022 mpox outbreak is the largest outbreak of mpox ever recorded outside of Africa.
  • The mpox virus is not as easily spread as the coronavirus or the flu virus.
  • There is no evidence that mpox can be spread through the air.
